Dr. Dave Ziegler
I grew up in Menomonee Falls and still remember getting my first pair of glasses in fifth grade and seeing leaves on the trees on the drive home from my optometrist’s office. After college at UW Eau Claire, I went to Southern California College of Optometry and graduated in 1981. Arriving back home with nothing but school loan debt and an old car, I bought a small eye care practice on 92nd and Beloit. Shortly afterward the office relocated it to 103rd and Oklahoma Avenue.
With only one staff person, she pre-tested the patients while I answered the phones. We would switch places when I did the eye exam. These were days before computers and fax machines. The newest technology was a typewriter that could type backward and erase up to a couple words at a time. I interviewed a 19-year-old woman for a staff position who was a waitress at a Mexican restaurant called Chi Chi’s. She took the job and has stayed for over 30 years. You may know her as Kim, our office manager.

I was introduced to Dr. Ziegler at one of our state conferences in 1991. As a recent graduate of the Illinois College of Optometry, I was looking to buy into a practice. I grew up working in my family’s clothing store in Whitewater. This peaked my interest in running a business and instilled a strong desire to take care of others. Dr. Ziegler and I were a perfect fit together and over the years, we have enjoyed the best partnership one could imagine. We relocated the practice to 2400 South 102nd Street in West Allis in 1996 and then expanded it in 2006.
On a flight to a business meeting Dr. Ziegler happened to be sitting next to George Karl, then the coach of the Bucks. That conversation led to being the team eye doctors for the Bucks, then Marquette basketball, the Milwaukee Wave, the Saturn Cycling team, and the Brewers. Since both doctors are interested in sports, these have been memorable experiences.

Children of family business owners usually end up spending some time working there, which is true for both of our families. As Dr. Ziegler’s daughter, I took a special interest in eye care. After accompanying him to the Philippines on a medical mission when I was in 8th grade, I decided that I wanted to be an eye doctor too. After undergraduate college at UW-Madison, I attended optometry school at Houston College of Optometry and joined the practice in 2015. It has been a special joy to share this endeavor together with my dad.
